Overview

The primary objective of the Process Engineer is providing technical support to maintain and improve the performance of the plant operations through equipment inspections, monitoring of specific process parameters, implementing improvement projects and providing technical recommendations. The Process Department continually strives to support the plant’s current and long-term goals acting as a predictive, analytical and result oriented tool with the objective of manufacturing the highest quality cement that meet customer demands.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participate in plant Team Based Safety activities and initiatives.
  • Improve the efficiency, consistency and productivity of the cement manufacturing process by conducting daily analysis and reporting of plant performance, incidents and stoppages. Works with the Operations Team to prioritize and implement actions.
  • Conduct Production Process studies and Audits as deemed necessary or which are requested by the line management, with the possible assistance of experts from the technical center, plant Operations Management or a Senior Process Engineer.
  • Works within the Plant Focus Teams resolving mid and long term initiatives ensuring objectives are met, provides process technical evidence to support improvement initiatives. Defines process conditions for modified equipment/installations under supervision of the Optimization Manager or the Senior Process Engineer.
  • Lead and develop process and manufacturing improvement proposals. Once proposals are approved, be able to efficiently implement the projects. Interface with vendors, contractors, and engineering firms whose functions are to provide project support with engineering and technical know-how associated with capital project installations.
  • Provide area coordinators, supervisors, and other support staff with technical guidance and advice on all areas of cement manufacturing process engineering, plant operations, design of process equipment, and the application of new technology.
  • Effectively utilize process systems such as MillMaster/KilnMaster, IP21, PPW, TIS and ASPEN tech.
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain standard operation procedures needed to solve typical process and systems problems encountered in the plant.
  • Identify environmental constraints and impact on operating permits associated with modification of process equipment, fuels, and /or raw material(s) changes.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Plant Safety: Complete required FLRAs, inspections, audits, and attend all required safety meetings and activities. Ensure 100% compliance with Team Based Safety requirements.
  • Circuit Control and evaluation: This includes equipment operation and the quality/consistency of the product throughout the process. Identify equipment deficiencies and work with other departments from the manufacturing team to implement corrections. The goal is to improve reliability, variability (from target), and to maximize continuous run time. This work is to be done for all circuits (Raw Grind, Kilns, and Finish Grind).
  • Circuit Optimization: This includes participation in any changes to the current control program, contributing in capital projects to increase throughput and/or regularity of mix. In addition, contributing to capital projects in the establishment of baseline data for circuits/ equipment that is to be modified, commissioning of projects, and validation of results.
  • Circuit equipment inspection and troubleshooting: This includes walkthroughs of all equipment lines in the raw grind, kilns, and finish grind workshops. Also includes physical inspections (internal and external) of equipment in these areas, such as mills, separators, coolers, and dust collectors. This will require ability to walk up/down stairs and ladders, and internally inspecting equipment that has been crash stopped (thus high temperatures).
  • Identify and document facts that illustrate the response of the process to its inputs and the effect of the process on its outputs. This includes an audit of equipment lines. The engineer is responsible for organizing the audit, sampling of key material streams in the circuit, measurement of air flows, performing necessary tests on samples, calculations, and final report generation. He/she is also responsible for bringing closure to audits by implementing recommendations and validating results.
  • Analytical Skills: Perform process control charts, shift way, probability, hypothesis test, regression and multiple correlation analysis to identify significance and impact of process variables in specific systems.
  • Training: This includes training of operations personnel (production, process, quality, environmental, maintenance) in the different areas of cement process engineering such as grinding and pyro-processing.

Qualifications

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical, Mechanical or Process Engineering is required. Other engineering fields ( i.e., Geologic, Metallurgical, Electrical, Industrial) may be considered.
  • Solid understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, chemistry, physics, and mathematics.
  • A minimum of three years of continuous process industry experience in a cement manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in a culture that placed strong emphasis on self-sufficiency and service orientation.
  • Proven ability and analytical approach to problem solving; particularly those of a technical nature.
  • Familiarity of working with environmental regulations in continuous co-process manufacturing industry is a plus.
Required Skills:
  • Strong leadership skills. Ability to work with cross-functional teams and influence decisions.
  • Knowledge of process, maintenance and production facilities.
  • Ability to apply basic engineering principles of thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass flow, and mechanical engineering.
  • Ability to work with all levels at the plant as well as with regional management and technical centers.
  • Understanding of complex mechanical and electrical technology and equipment.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Achievement oriented, strong work ethic, tenacious, impeccable attention to detail.
