The Plant Manager has direct responsibility for the Thunder Bay Aggregate dock and RMX plant site including safety, environment, sales, operations, inventory management, performance, quality, financial performance, employee relations, plant’s image and community relations. The Plant Manager is a sales professional who understands the value of planning and processes and takes a disciplined approach to execution, while working closely and effectively with safety, environment, operations, credit, and customer service performance, finance and HR personnel.  





  • Health and Safety: Responsible for implementation and compliance of Lafarge Safety Program to ensure personnel are working in a safe manner in accordance with policies and procedures.  Ensures all aspects of his/her role are executed in a safe manner.  Obeys safety guidelines when on construction sites and Lafarge operations. Ensures that employees, equipment and processes meet or exceed the, OSHA and Lafarge guidelines, standards and advisories.  Pursues a culture of safety that is best in class with an objective of “zero” injuries or incidents.  Actively engages with the employees to reinforce safe behaviors.


  • Environment: Establishes environmental policies and processes as a priority at the site. Recognizes environmental compliance as a priority at the site.  Ensures regulations are met or exceeded by following Lafarge best practices.


  • Sales: Accountable for RMX and AGG Sales, customer profiling and job quoting; develop strategies to improve commercial performance; liaise and create customer relationships in surrounding areas to address upcoming and current demands and concerns. Ensures jobsite customer management and customer relations. Responsible for sales strategy, plan and key performance indicators in order to achieve sales revenue and profitability target. Provide accurate budgeting, forecast & backlog reports across customer portfolio and keeps information pertaining to market share, selling price, job closings, customer segmentation, etc and use this information to price projects with the ongoing support of the Sales Manager.  Help customers obtain concrete information and strengthen customer relations through value added marketing and branded products to make company supplier of choice.



  • Operations Strategy: Provides direct oversight in the processing, storage, and shipping of concrete at the plant. Embraces best practices, processes and tools to ensure plant activities are optimized and costs are best in class.  Effectively utilizes Lafarge’s maintenance programs to maximize plant up-time and manage costs.  Understands the value of quality and ensures processes are in place to provide a quality product to our customers.  Utilizes best practices in processing to ensure product remains within specifications as it is received by our customers.  Ensure optimal operation and maintenance of all fixed and mobile equipment.



  • Operations Analysis and Action Tracking: Effectively utilizes KPIs, Performance Efficiency Reviews, financial statements and operational reports to track performance, establish effective action plans and continuously improve the operations.  Uses available reports effectively to measure quality, identify variances and establish corrective action.


  • Plant Image: Maintains the plant in accordance with stated guidelines for plant image.  Plant image includes housekeeping, parts storage, vehicles and equipment condition (cleanliness and appearance), entrance & property, and buildings.


  • HR/Coaching & Mentoring: Manage all Direct reports to achieve success. Responsible for effective recruitment, merit/recognition, development, disciplinary actions and terminations on site.  Participates in union negotiations (where applicable).  Fosters effective employee relations. Establishes a safe and productive work environment employees are proud to represent Lafarge.


  • Association Involvement: Participates in industry associations as a representative of Lafarge. Promotes Lafarge’s interests and communicates in a manner which upholds Lafarge as a good corporate citizen.  Represent the company in internal and external activities and events.   


  • Inventory Management: Closely manages inventory requirements at the site through frequent coordination with the suppliers, performance and accounting.


  • Performance Management: Promotes a culture of performance.  Effectively utilizes KPIs, Performance Efficiency Reviews, financial statements and operational reports to track performance, establish effective action plans and continuously improve the operations. 


  • Quality: Understands the value of quality and ensures processes are in place to provide a quality product to our customers.  Utilizes best practices of production and delivery.


  • Planning: Develops operational and capital plans for the plant to continuously improve productivity and maintain costs as low or lower than our competition.  Prepares budgets and forecasts.


  • Community Relations: Works proactively with the local community to ensure that Lafarge is a valued member of the community.  Activities include organization of open houses and participation with local schools and non-profit organizations.


  • Customer Focus: Interacts with customers in order to strengthen the business relationship and to insure that expectations for quality and quantity of material are met.

Qualification Profile:


Education & Work Experience:


  • Bachelor Degree in any major with strong experience in retail commercial business industry (sales and marketing area) and possess knowledge in concrete, cement and other related construction materials technology.
  • 5+ years of related experience


Knowledge & Skills:


  • Excellent sales/customer service skills – dedicated to meeting the expectations of internal and external customers
  • Must be flexible and balance shifting priorities to meet deadlines
  • Posses a general knowledge of construction and A&C products and a solid understanding of the market, competition and business opportunities
  • Excellent leadership skills - must be able to motivate others and provide complete, direct and actionable feedback
  • Posses a commitment to and willingness to devote great effort and time in order to reach goals
  • Ability to make decision is a timely manner, sometimes with incomplete data and under tight deadlines and pressure
