Overview

The Assistant Production Manager plays an important role in the development, leadership and management of the operational functions and performance of Texada Quarry.  The individual works with his/her team to optimize production performance and communication across functional groups meeting all necessary Safety & Environmental policies/regulations.  Primary focus is optimizing available reserves and leveraging operational excellence to achieve the highest productivity at the lowest cost of production. Ensures Lafarge is viewed as a valued member of the industry and local communities in which it operates.  This position will also closely interact with the General Manager.

Responsibilities

Health and Safety

  • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
  • Ensures safe and healthy working conditions on site.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all health and safety rules and country regulations.

Financial Management: 

  • Planning, execution and tracking of financial performance with local/regional tools.
  • Develop, implement and adhere to budgets, monthly operations plan and inventory forecast to identify cost reduction/working capital improvements.
  • Promote a culture of performance and effectively develops goals and objectives to implement actions, track performance and continuously look for opportunities for improvement

Customer Focus:

  • Inventory reconciliation while balancing inventory levels in order to meet local demand.
  • Manage product quality to meet customer specifications
  • Develop crushing schedules to meet sales targets
  • Schedule and assist logistics, quality and maintenance staff to optimize production, load out efficiencies and product quality.

Operations Management: 

  • Project management
  • Interacts with direct managers to develop best practices, processes and to ensure plant activities are optimized and costs are best in class.
  • Planning, Developing/Identifying efficiencies in production and ensuring implementation
  • Effectively use Lafarge resources and programs to drive operational excellence.

Environment, Land & Community Relations: 

  • Establishes that the environment is a priority. Ensure all local, provincial and federal regulations are met or exceeded by following Lafarge best practices.
  • Site management through the development and implementation of a sustainable mining plan with detailed logging, stripping, production phasing and rehabilitation forecasts to ensure reserve optimization, while managing community impact.
  • Participation in local community events and meetings with community stake-holders
  • Work with Environmental Manager to develop, implement and manage operational standards to manage activities and mitigate our environmental impact.

People Management:

  • Manages production team to ensure proper procedures are followed and any questions or concerns answered. Ensure IDP development and follow-through.
  • Works closely with all of the Management Team to ensure everything is functioning as it should.
  • Takes time to be present and open to alllevels of the operation – leading by example and driving a culture of safety and performance
  • Recruitment and development/coaching of supervisors and hourly employees including collaboration and negotiations with union

Dimensions

  • Indirect Reports: 4 Salaried Supervisors, 40 Unionized hourly
  • Relationships: Works closely with GM, Safety Manager, Logistics and Admin. Manager, Quality Control Manager, Maintenance Manager,  the Land Group and outside suppliers
  • Volumes: 4 million tonnes
  • 2 operating plants
  • 1 barge loader, 1 ship loader

Specific Accountabilities

  • Safety: Near Miss, MVA’s, FA’s, MI’s, LTI’s Processes (implemented by Safety Manager)
  • Production: manufacturing KPI’s, maintenance coordination, contractor management, monthly production targets, monthly operations plan
  • Financial: adhere to labour/production budgets, cost-savings targets

Qualifications

Education:

  • Diploma or degree in mining engineering or related field preferred.
  • Valid British Columbia Open Pit Shift Boss Certificate

Experience and Skill Set:

  • Minimum of 10years ofsupervision and industrial processexperience
  • Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
  • Proven team leadership
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication, negotiation and change management skills
  • Good knowledge of aggregate industry and working in unionized environment
