Overview

Position Summary:

The prime objective of the Finish and Shipping Coordinator at the Exshaw Plant is to lead all production operations of the finish grinding and shipping areas on a daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. In doing so, assure that the desired quantity and quality of the different types of cement are produced safely, on time, and within budget in a clean and environmentally responsible manner. Conduct operations in a continuous improvement mode and support the preventative maintenance program to ensure that the full life expectancy of equipment is met.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

 

Safety leadership:

  • Promotes safety by ensuring tailgate and safety meetings are held
  • Develops and implements the proper safety procedures (SOPs) with a continuous improvement perspective
  • Addresses identified risks (e.g. energy isolation, working at heights and all other identified risks through risk assessments), performs VFL’s, tracks associated results and communicates on them.
  • Ensures that the department safety training and awareness program is implemented at the functional team level. Monitors the safety audit program.
  • Models proper working environment and conditions.

Operational:

  • The Area Production Coordinators are the key leaders of the Cross Functional Teams which consist of key Production, Quality, Maintenance and Process personnel who are responsible for problem-solving, Safety & Housekeeping improvements and optimization of the finish grinding and shipping systems.
  • Participates in the annual production budget preparation and contributes input of the raw materials (gypsum, limestone, grinding aid, and clinker) for the finish grinding and shipping areas.
  • Defines the shipping and finish mill yearly objectives (e.g. safety, serving customers, quality, cost reduction, performance) with input from plant objectives and distribution and share it with all employees.
  • Manages the finish mill and shipping yearly budgets.
  • Defines daily, weekly, monthly grinding plan. Ensures finish goods inventories are up to date each opening day.
  • Updates and creates operational SOPs and implements in a continuous improvement model.
  • Takes immediate actions when deviations occur to grinding plan or shipping lanes, and informs distribution in an immediate, proactive fashion.
  • Ensures that first level inspections in the shipping and finish mill area are completed and reported findings are planned (developed together with maintenance / methods): finish mill, checks of silo extractions, air slides and mobile equipment, etc.
  • Oversee calibrations of all weighing devices is done according to the rules and the schedule.
  • Coordinate with the Shipping Supervisor and Truck Modal Manager to minimize rail demurrage and monitor CP performance.
  • Formulates capital and cost savings projects to improve efficiency and submits appropriation requests to secure project capital.
  • In conjunction with the Process Engineer for the finish mill area forecasts and calculates the ball charges of the grinding mills and directs the additions to maintain proper ball levels to optimize output and energy consumption.
  • Advises and assists the Maintenance Department with the scheduling and execution of annual major repairs of production equipment.
  • Coordinates all interventions in shipping and finish grinding in case of breakdown.
  • Coordination of truck and rail shipments with distribution group.
  • Coordination stocking and handling of incoming additive raw materials via rail.
  • Ensures gypsum, limestone, grinding aid stock is available, manage supply chain as required.
  • Manage, direct and coordinate overall activities of the department and interaction with other departments
  • Assists where required in the Production Department and fills in other Areas as needed.
  • Works with purchasing, accounting, and customer service departments to ensure control of documentation related to product inventory, sales orders, and shipments and SAP is accurate.

Personnel:

  • Ensures that finish mill and shipping personnel put forward continuous improvement actions for safety and technical performance with impacts on business results.
  • Reviews the performance of the Area B Operator of his area and directs/coaches for performance accordingly.
  • With the Shipping Supervisor, ensures that the scheduling of the shipping department is maintained and all efficiencies are realized in manning.
  • Application and administration of the Collective Agreement.
  • Responsible for team development of assigned personnel by providing resources, training and direction needed to promote team process.

Results/Accountabilities

  • Includes all plant production operations from the clinker storage to finish grinding and shipping department.
  • Responsible and accountable to the Production Manager to constantly monitor and control of finish grinding and shipping budget.
  • Major plant equipment includes:
  • Finish ball mills FM1 & FM2
  • Finish vertical mill FM3
  • Chiller plant
  • Storage Silos (airlift)
  • Truck & BOD
  • Rail
  • Stock houses
  • Manages a continuous 24 hour/day operation.
  • Reports to the Production Manager.

Internal controls providing reasonable assurance of effective and efficient operations, including actions to prevent and detect fraud and protect Company resources

 

Ensure compliance with internal control procedures - communicating problems in operations, unwarranted deviations from established standards, and violations of policy or law

Relationships with Other Jobs:

Coordinate with the entire Production department the quantity of clinker available.

Plan and coordinate the execution with Maintenance department of the overhaul, mini-repairs, and shutdown of the finish grinding and shipping equipment for their optimum functionality.

Plan, inform, and communicate the availability of the different products in short and medium term.

Qualifications

Qualification profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in engineering, or technical diploma is preferred
  • 4 years of experience in a production related function, in a cement or heavy manufacturing industry.
  • Must be proficient in computer systems.
  • Knowledge of modern safety techniques.
  • Strong and proven leadership skills.
  • The ability to work with cross functional teams and influence decisions.
  • Knowledge of process maintenance, production facilities as well as environmental regulations.
  • The ability to work with all levels of the plant as well as with regional management and technical centers.
  • The ability to be achievement oriented and tenacious, with strong work ethic and an impeccable attention to detail.
  • The ability to work well with others of a diversified background.
  • The ability to persuade and motivate others.
  • The ability to present ideas and reports clearly, both written and verbal.
  • Organizational skills in order to manage both time and equipment.
