The Shipping Operator/Labourer is responsible for supporting many aspects of the depot operations. They provide housekeeping and clean up support for the yard and plant to ensure a safe, clean environment for all employees. They must also operate the forklift and small loader to help load trucks. This position provides vacation coverage for the main shipping loader operators across the depots in the GTA, so they must be able to perform routine maintenance including washing, cleaning, greasing, fueling and monitoring fuel levels of the machines. They are expected to provide vacation coverage to scale weighmasters if needed, so they must be able to handle cash and complete closing paperwork using a computer. This position may require working some nights during salt season or when receiving boat material. The Shipping Operator/Labourer is an excellent team player and utilizes their strong organization and communication skills to execute and assist in daily tasks as well as site projects. The ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment along with proficiency with computers is essential. The candidate will be self motivated and be able to manage their time efficiently on their own with little supervision. Would be expected to perform some physical activity tasks, work outdoors in all types of weather, which could include heavy lifting, bending and twisting.



  • Safety: Promote safety culture through engagement with employees, JHSC, subcontractors and suppliers,implementation and maintenance of local and regional initiatives with an objective of “zero” safety incidents. Administer and promote safety policies, processes and review procedures to ensure that site meets or exceeds all Lafarge and Regulatory guidelines.
  • Attendance: Showing up on time at the location(s) and time(s) scheduled by supervisor.
  • Conduct: Treating customers, haulers and co-workers in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Policies & Procedures: Accurate and timely entry of data and information into APEX as prescribed by Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Equipment: Ensure assigned equipment is operated and maintained to original equipment manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
  • Maintenance: Perform daily inspections as part of our preventative maintenance program to ensure maintenance is scheduled and completed as required.
  • Driver Communication: Checking for compliance with Safe Trucker Program. Delivery of key logistics messages. Receive and report feedback from drivers to appropriate personnel.
  • Other: Perform other duties as assigned to assist in the efficient operation of the plant and site.


Relationships with Others Jobs


  • Reports to the Depot Supervisor, Depot Manager
  • This position requires extensive liaison with dispatch, crushing plant, local concrete plant


Specific Accountabilities:


  • Safety: Near Miss and HI process, Incident reporting, Daily Safety Huddles, Risk Assessments
  • Maintenance: daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspection process, Prioritize deficiencies as they occur


Education & Work Experience:


  • Canadian secondary school diploma or equivalent
  • Industrial Plant opertaion experience an asset
  • Heavy equipment operation experience an asset


Knowledge & Skills:


  • Preferred 3 years experience
  • Specific mobile equipment training
  • Specific Module surface miner training
  • 972 Operating Training Course (Toromont)
  • Mechanical Aptitude
  • Computer literacy an asset
