Reporting to the VPGM of the Greater Calgary Area, the General Manager is responsible for the Pipe and Precast business, including sales, operations, financial control, marketing, customer relations, personnel, environment, maintenance and purchasing. 


The General Manager will execute the business strategy and provide leadership while maximizing profitability and optimization of resources.  In addition, the General Manager ensures that all products and services that touch the customer meets Lafarge’s world class standard, upholds all company commitments, policies and standards; and supports a culture that holds health & safety as a top priority. 


  1. Set long range goals and strategic plans, taking into account market conditions and trends, competitive environment and available resources
  2. Set financial and operating goals and monitor progress towards achieving these defined targets
  3. Drives for continuous business performance improvement while never compromising Lafarge’s commitment to providing world-class service to the customer. Ensure customer satisfaction with excellent product and service quality
  4. Maintains a collaborative relationship with other product lines and same product line counterparts ensuring a synergy which achieves a strategic and competitive edge for Lafarge.
  5. Development and expansion of current and new products
  6. Provide leadership and vision for the health & safety culture and implement best practices and provide visible felt leadership
  7. Operate business with respect to the environment which will require an understanding of local, provincial and federal policies
  8. Encourage good relationships between management, employees and the union
  9. Develop key personnel and strive to ensure all staff have the support necessary to grow within their positions

Relationships with Others Jobs: 

  • Reports to the VPGM of the Greater Calgary Area
  • Collaborates across the market and across other product lines
  • Works closely with other operations managers, plant managers, and sales force in the GCA market
  • Works in conjunction with support staff (finance manager, credit manager, health & safety manager, environment manager, and human resource manager) regularly.
  • Close interaction with customers to maintain and build key relationships

Specific Accountabilities:

  • Prepare sales and operating budgets
  • Achieve sales and production objectives
  • Ensure compliance with all laws and company guidelines and policies
  • Ensure that designs add value and give Lafarge the highest possible returns while maintaining quality and safety
  • Ensure project management, production, installation and quality control staff work effectively together
  • Ensure complete and sufficient preliminary design work to accurately price projects


Education & Work Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in engineering or business (or a technical/business diploma combined with equivalent experience)
  • 10 years relevant and progressive experience

 Knowledge & Skills:

  • A demonstrated ability to lead and motivate staff
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to meet and deal at a senior level with customers and owners to promote Lafarge products and image
  • Ability to develop effective internal and external relationships
  • Good long-term (5 years) strategic and planning skills
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Excellent organizational skills, meets deadlines and works well under stressful conditions to complete projects
