This position's prime objective is to provide vacation, training and sickness relief for the current four (4) shift supervisors.  While on shift the relief supervisor shall ensure the good functioning of the production process from the raw mix preparation to the cement silos with respect to quality and production objectives, daily planning and plant safety and environment procedures.  In addition, he or she will ensure process operators (A and B-Ops) are held accountable for the work standards and performance in order to achieve the Departmental objectives and Plant targets. Shifts are 12 hours in duration and rotate amongst the supervisors to provide supervision to a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year operation.



The incumbent will report directly to the Production Coordinator (Operations).  Performance review will be conducted by the Production Coordinator (Operations) with input from the other “client” department heads.



  • Within the framework of the production instructions given by the production coordinator, is in charge of raw mix preparation, grinding, clinker and cement production, cement storage after milling in accordance with Quality Assurance procedures and environment regulations.
  • When necessary adapt the production planning.
  • Coordinate all interventions in case of breakdown.
  • Supervise the shipping areas and direct the PSWs on nights and weekends.
  • Take over the direct responsibility for the control of kiln and mill in case of complicated situation.
  • Guarantee the respect of the planned consumption of alternate fuel.
  • Ensure proper use of the equipment in particular to avoid damage.
  • Organizes manpower due to absenteeism and overtime requirements.
  • Equipment optimization and benchmarking.
  • Administration of the Collective Agreement.
  • Participates in development and implementation of safety rules and procedures. Carry out monthly safety meetings and seek to resolve all safety actions raised by the crew.
  • Carry out daily safety workplace inspections, hazard and field level risk assessments (FLRAs).
  • Perform annual EDP (Employee Development Program) reviews for process operators (A & B Ops).
  • Facilitate reliability corrections as required in areas of responsibility.
  • Perform Level 2 First Aid Attendant as required.
  • Carry out Incident Commander Duties as required.
  • Carry out Emergency Response Team (ERT) Leader Duties as required.



The relief supervisor is expected to spend at least half (1/2) of the year on shift covering for other supervisors.  When not relieving the relief supervisor is expected to carry out the following duties:

  • Review and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Organize and carry out operator training.
  • Participate in Winter Turnarounds (WTA) activities.
  • Execute production projects.
  • Carry out first level inspections.
  • Lead safety and housekeeping teams.



  • Ensure in quality and quantity the production of raw mix, clinker and cement under the production coordinator‘s instructions.
  • Guarantee the achievement of the quality objectives of intermediate and finished products.
  • Manage the activity of his/her crew according to the production priorities and ensure that the safety and environment procedures are met. Suggest improvements with respects to safety at work.
  • Ensure that the production and quality control equipments are in good working conditions by regular inspections and calls for maintenance interventions.
  • Propose technical improvements with the view of optimising the product quality, process efficiency, environmental impact of the production process.
  • Respects production commitments in terms of volume, deadlines, costs and product compliance.
  • Ensures a good work atmosphere in the crew. Have routine open communication and dialogue with Process Operators.
  • Ensures the safety of the people working in the crew and protects the integrity of Plant equipment.
  • Ensures the compliance with the environmental standards in the crew.
  • Maximize Alternate Fuel utilization.


Qualifications Profile:



Minimum post secondary education at a technical college or related subject with minimum 3 to 5 years heavy industry experience. 


Technical Skills:


  • Good knowledge of all applicable environmental and safety laws and regulations
  • Cement production or similar continuous process operation
  • Equipment technology
  • Computer literacy
  • Problem solving methods and tools (Root Cause Failure Analysis, Risk Analysis).
  • Understanding of cause and effect relationships.
  • Ability to learn through formal training and work related experiences.
  • Principles of measurement
  • Good knowledge of product quality parameters and of quality control (QC) test.



  • Ability to conduct sensory inspections of equipment to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Knowledge of lubrication principles and specificities for each equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles of main cement manufacturing equipment (FK pump, pulse jet dust collectors, airslides, bucket elevators, belt conveyors, etc.)



  • Basic knowledge of electricity principles and instrumentation (Energy Isolation, basic troubleshooting skills and general awareness of arc flash and electrical hazards).



  • Knowledge of the structure of HMI supervision software.
  • Basic knowledge (how to identify, interpret an alarm or a problem with the alarm).
  • Process interlocking and startup sequences.
