The Estimator Negotiated/Private Work Lead has direct accountability for the preparing, submitting and tracking of estimates primarily focused on the commercial, subdivision and residential segments. Key to this role is the focus on building industry relationships to provide a competitive advantage for Lafarge, including leveraging industry connections to enhance the quantum and margin of negotiated and private work opportunities.  In addition, this role will be expected to participate in other segment bids, including minor General Contractor projects.  This role directly contributes to a “One Lafarge” vision by incorporating and utilizing all of Lafarge’s materials into bids with a view to growing value engineering opportunities.


The Estimator contributes to organizational excellence by continually promoting a culture of agility, collaboration and empowerment (ACE) enabling continuous improvement.


Health & Safety

  • Adheres and follows Lafarge’s safety and environmental policies. Ensures this is represented in bids.


Customer Focus

  • Build strong relationships with private work customers, consultants and owners
  • Maintains and communicates a clear understanding of private/negotiated work value propositions
  • Ensures, through regular contact, that client satisfaction has been achieved
  • Works with customers to enhance value engineering opportunities



  • Prepare accurate and competitive cost estimates based on efficient construction practices, and using the most competitive and reliable subcontractors and suppliers
  • Collaborate with Superintendents when preparing bids
  • Prepare final bid, complete with mark-up based on market conditions, Lafarge policy and in conjunction with the Estimating Manager and/or General Manager
  • Complete takeoffs as necessary to provide realistic and precise quotes


Job Management

  • Ensure sub-contractor utilization in in accordance with documented contractor safety management processes
  • Monitor project costs and financial reports. Provide feedback to operations and estimating departments
  • Assist Accounts Receivable in following up with outstanding payments


Market Analysis

  • Follow up with submitted bids to track the market and to identify strategic improvements
  • Provide insight into the strategic planning process on key private/negotiated work accounts


People Management

  • Manage subcontractors, outline expectations, scheduling information and track productions
  • Assist in the development of Co-op Students and Junior Estimators




Specific Accountability


  • Verify contract documents and blueprints for accuracy and project materials
  • Job set-up for all projects estimated and awarded to Lafarge, including credit approval, schedules, pre-construction meetings, subcontract agreements, purchase orders, as well as internal job setup for operations and accounting
  • Prepare contract change order pricing and ensure project costs have been accounted for and invoiced accordingly
  • Attend pre-tender site meetings/visits to determine if any additional site issues can impact productions
  • Meet anticipated bid closing dates

Dimensions / Relationships with Others’ Jobs

  • Interfaces closely with the all Estimators and Contract Administrator
  • Works with Operations Superintendents
  • Directly reports to the Estimating Manager



  • Diploma or Degree in Business or Engineering


Experience and Skill Set:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years estimating experience
  • Field construction experience preferred
  • Understanding of estimating software, specifically Bid2Win
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication, negotiation and change management skills
  • Good knowledge of Paving, Asphalt and Construction industry
  • Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
