    The General Superintendent of Vancouver Pave and Construction has direct responsibility and accountability for the safety and operational performance of the operations of the GVA construction division.  The General Superintendent plays a key role in executing safety policies, performance plans, cost savings, KPI targets, manage equipment fleet, and work with staff to ensure projects are completed safely, on budget, with no deficiencies, and for customer satisfaction. 


    The General Superintendent is integral in developing and maintaining the capability of the GVA operations organization to increase construction revenue and capability.  This includes coaching and mentoring direct reports and continually promoting a culture of agility, collaboration, and empowerment (ACE) enabling continuous improvement.


    This job description pertains to the following functions in the business unit:

    • Paving
    • Milling
    • Grading
    • Curb and Gutter


    Health and Safety:  

    • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example
    • Ensures safe and healthy working conditions in sites under his/her responsibility
    • Ensure strict compliance with all health and safety rules and country regulations


    Financial Management: 

    • Actively monitor projects performance with level of detail to drive execution and tracking
    • Participate in monthly financial review with team of the P&L and Balance sheet
    • Ensure holdbacks, accounts receivable, and additional financial items are driven to reduce working capital.
    • Ensure required field level financial documentation (monthly progresses, quantity sheets, etc) are being submitted accurately and in a timely manner.
    • Identify areas of CAPEX to increase performance in operations


    Customer Focus:

    • Front line contact with customers to ensure retention and attraction
    • Continually look for opportunities and present Lafarge branded products to customers
    • Identify and implement opportunities to maximize vertical integration of Lafarge products


    Operations Management

    • Management of field operations of private and projects for the Pave and Construction division specific to delegated discipline.
    • Lead direct reports to ensure best practices, processes, and activities are optimized and costs are best in class



    Environment, Land & Community Relations: 

    • Establishes the environment as a priority. Ensures all local and provincial and federal regulations are met or exceeded by following Lafarge best practices and conditions of site permits
    • Ensure crews have been orientated and trained in environmental responsibilities
    • Follow Group and country corporate social responsibility objectives in pave and construction related community relations activities


    People Management:

    • Promotes and ACE culture
    • ‘Walks the floor.’ Takes the time to be present in all locations of the operations, and to be open to all levels of the organization, to communication and concerns
    • Participates in the building of the career and succession plan for the key positions and employees in the paving, asphalt and construction operations
    • Ensure the right persons are in the right position, reflecting the Group diversity commitments. Hires and dismisses staff in co-ordination with HR, as required.



    • Degree in Engineering, Diploma from Technical Institute in Engineering, or 10 years  related field experience


    Experience and Skill Set:

    • Minimum of 10 years of management experience
    • Minimum of 10 years field experience
    • Proven team leadership
    • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
    • Strong communication, negotiation and change management skills
    • Good knowledge of Concrete Curb & Sidewalk, the Construction industry and working in unionized environment
    • Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
    • Independent thinker with a high capacity of working under pressure and stress
    • Ability to read, analyze and interpret plans and specifications, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations
    • Ability to effectively present information in writing, and respond to questions from a group of managers, clients, customers and the general public
    • Ability to calculate figures, amounts, such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area circumference and volume
    • Ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
    • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
    • Computer proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications
