    Overview

    To provide operational leadership with guidance, mentoring and assistance in areas of safe work process, health & safety policy, legislative requirements, training and workplace inspection.  The incumbent provides expertise and mentoring in the area of operational health and safety, and ensures appropriate health & safety training, practices, policies and procedures are in place to avoid preventable health and safety occurrences.

    Responsibilities

    • Work closely with the Business Unit Management Teams and Health & Safety Manager to ensure implementation and ongoing improvement of safety, health and loss control processes and systems within their assigned regional areas.
    • Participate in the effective execution and delivery of health & safety programs and communications in support of the Lafarge Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).
    • Participate as the health and safety representative for new equipment / process design reviews or commissioning approvals within the Management of Change (MOC) procedure for areas supported.
    • Provide on-going, in-field coaching to operations personnel regarding legislative and corporate health & safety requirements and expectations.
    • Coach, guide and assist site personnel to understand and execute upon their responsibilities related to management of safety, health and loss control issues.
    • Work with the Health and Safety Manager to identify health & safety system, program and training needs for the assigned regional areas and ensure they are in line with the requirements of the HSMS.
    • Assist Business Unit Management to identify health & safety improvement areas, to develop action plans and to achieve Health & Safety Improvement Plan objectives.
    • Assist in the development of safe work processes for manufacturing, maintenance and operational functions with a focus on high-risk activity.
    • Collect, analyze and distribute health and safety KPI information.
    • Develop custom reporting to present health & safety statistical information in a meaningful format.
    • Participate and assist in the development and sourcing of new health & safety products ensuring effectiveness, consistency, and financial prudence.
    • Develop and deliver health & safety related training modules and programs reflective of applicable legislative requirements and corporate safety policies, procedures and practices.
    • Develop and maintain a positive and proactive relationship with Business Unit and Site Management, employees and local regulatory agencies.
    • Assist with follow-up on audit recommendations to ensure all items have been completed on time and assist with removing any barriers to completion.
    • Support site management to ensure the early and safe return to work for injured employees.

     

    Relationships with Other Jobs:

     

    • Work closely with site-level and unit-level management on implementation of Health and Safety Management Systems, Processes and Training.
    • Engage, coach and influence site, area, and functional leaders regarding health and safety activities and processes with an aim of 70% of “face time” in the field within the areas of responsibility.
    • Work with Health and Safety Manager in determining Business Unit priorities and developing policies / procedures.
    • Interface with peers in other areas in the development of programs and systems.
    • Works closely and in collaboration with manufacturing/performance to ensure Management of Change (MOC) procedures are integrated into all required changes to equipment / process.
    • Assist Human Resources / Labour Relations on the safety and loss control aspects of the following HR/LR-related programs:

     

    Worker Compensation Program

    Return – to – Work (Light / Modified Duty) Program

    Occupational Medical Evaluation Program

    Consequence Management Program

     

     

    Specific Accountabilities:

    • Ability to work flexible hours as dictated by the requirements of the position, including extra time at peak intervals
    • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage multiple activities

    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information

    • Strong organizational skills, with ability to attend to detail, ensuring accuracy and timeliness

    • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to relate to persons at all corporate levels, with diverse educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds

    Qualifications

    • Applicable College or University education, plus formal training in specialized areas
    • 4-7 years in a Health and Safety or related role
    • Working towards the successful attainment of a CRSP designation
    • Timely and sound decision-making skills
