    Overview

    The Marine Dispatcher will join a high performing team and be a key contributor to the success of the Greater Vancouver Aggregates group.  The Lafarge Marine Division provides tug and barge services to internal and external customers in the Greater Vancouver Area.  The primary objectives of this role are to achieve efficiencies of operations and other critical revenue objectives for the market area while ensuring our offering promotes safety, service and value for our customers. 

    The Marine Dispatcher attempts to maximize profitability by continuing a strategy to optimize operations, understand customer requirements, enhance key customer relationships, and embrace best practice sales and operational management tools and frameworks.  In addition, this role ensures reconciliation and crewing processes are undertaken to allow informed decision making by stakeholders.  

     

    This role requires on-call duties on a weekly rotational basis to ensure peak operational performance.

    Responsibilities

    Health and Safety:  

    • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas.
    • Maintains documentation on safety drills, exercises, tool box talks and training for Lafarge and Transport Canada reporting requirements.
    • Maintain membership on the Joint Health and Safety Committee.

    Operations:

    • Maintains a live day to day Marine operations and work schedule to optimize costs, asset utilization and customer needs.
    • Control daily operating costs and review and analyze monthly revenue and expenses.
    • Coordinate assists and shifts through external suppliers and maintain accurate records for cost management purposes. Review shift, assist, rental invoices for accuracy.
    • Provide written orders to crews.
    • Work with the Maintenance group to schedule equipment maintenance in an efficient and cost effective manner.
    • Support daily administration functions including payroll, monitoring lay day dispositions, AR/AP.
    • Maintain and analyze KPI information to drive operational efficiency. Review tug log reports and enter information into KPI and operations tracking tools.
    • Complete Customs declarations.

    Customer Focus:

    • Liaises with customer site representatives to facilitate schedules and marine activities. Communicates loading and material movement to all stakeholders.
    • Assists team in building solid relationships with existing customers.
    • Work closely with other relevant Lafarge product lines (i.e. ready mix, asphalt and paving) to ensure there is a consistent and effective offering to the customer and all potential synergies are maximized.

    Personnel:

    • Support planning of crew schedules to meet operational and unionized constraints
    • Supports maintenance of certification records for all personnel.
    • Facilitates the processing of HR documentation for all Marine hourly employees.
    • Review overtime submissions and provide advice to management on trends or issues.
    • Support the Dispatch Coordinator and crews on HR processes.

    Dimensions:

    • Relationships: Works closely with the Dispatch Coordinator and all Lafarge GVA divisions for material delivery. Works with industry providers to optimize scheduling and costs. Works with boat crews on all operational and HR issues.
    • Three Class II voyage tugs, 11 flat deck barges, 1 auto offloading barge, depot and barge conveyors, four ramp berths, four deport berths, marine division workshop facilities.

    Specific  Accountabilities

    • Tug and barge schedules
    • Cost management and reconciliation of assists, shifts, rentals
    • KPI accuracy and timeliness

    Qualifications

    Education: 

    • Post-Secondary diploma in a related field (Business or Logistics) or the equivalent of education and experience.

    Experience and Skill Set: 

    • Minimum of 3 –5 years of Marine/Aggregate logistics.
    • Leadership, interpersonal and strong communication skills make you an ideal candidate.
    • Ability to work in a fast-paced and sometimes stressful environment. Good attention to detail.
    • Proven problem solving and analytical skills in a high paced environment.
    • Self-motivated, strong team player.
    • Proficiency with computer applications (Microsoft, Google business suite).
    • Knowledgeable about land and marine based operations. Aggregate production and barge loading / offloading knowledge is helpful, but not required.
