    Overview

    This position's prime objective can be divided into two broad areas, one being technical and the other being interpersonal.  From a technical perspective the incumbent’s role will be to develop and maintain kiln stability, quality and productivity.  This will be accomplished via the interpersonal objective of operator development and training in appropriate, repeatable, consistent, clearly communicated and documented operating procedures.

    Responsibilities

    The responsibilities of this position are primarily the proper operation the  kiln system and the mentoring and coaching of control room operators.  This will be accomplished via the following:

    • Mentoring of the existing A and A/B operators.
    • Examination and re-evaluation of all existing kiln related SOPs.
    • Development of new SOPs as required.
    • Communication of expectations in regards to kiln operations to all operators.
    • Reviewing daily trends with operators.
    • Training of both control room and field operators in kiln operation from a control room and field aspect. This will include the implementation of the operator development and certification program and objectives set out by CIP.
    • Defining and tuning of operational control loops related to kiln operation.
    • Implementation of the KILN AND MILL MASTER system for automated kiln control.
    • Reviewing past trends and communicating issues.
    • The set up and maintenance of clear operational parameters for both kiln systems
    • The incumbent will work closely with the Production Manager, Mechanical Maintenance Manager, Electrical and Automation Supervisor, Process group and laboratory group to make corrective changes and ensure optimum kiln performance.
    Specific Responsibilities
    • Owner of all kiln related production SOPs (to include updating and implementation of new SOPs as required)
    • Hold daily meetings with A-ops and shift Foremen to review previous 24 hours of kiln operation.
    • Liaison of all kiln related issues, (both incoming and outgoing) to external departments.
    • Ensure all operators are equal in knowledge and strengths.
    • Ensure all operators use identical operating techniques and have a clear understanding of set points, operating parameters and kiln related issues.
    • Develop a documented training program for the A-op position.
    • Revise and keep current the A-op teach and test and operator minimum requirements.
    • Work with the systems group to fine-tune and implement kiln system control loops.
    • Work with the systems group to establish proper alarm set points and remove redundant and non-essential alarms.
    • Act as kiln start-up champion after annual shutdowns.
    • Hold quarterly A-operator meetings to discuss issues, enhancements and ideas.
    • Evaluate equipment performance and communicate thoughts and ideas to better the systems.
    • Daily evaluation and communication of microscopy.
    • Daily evaluation and communication of raw feed and clinker chemistry.
    • Perform RCA on all major kiln related incidents.
    • Coaching, evaluating and training of control room operators in an informal and formal basis in both group and one-on-one settings.
    • Champion the set up and implementation of the KILN AND MILL MASTER control system and ensure use of the same.

    Qualifications

    Education: 

    • Completion of a 2 or 3 year technical program or equivalent program required for manufacturing technologists, or extensive experience in kiln operations and processes.

     

    Experience and Skill Set:

    • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suit.
    • Knowledge of site’s and appropriate occupational safety techniques.
    • Knowledge of RCA.
    • Good knowledge of plant production processes and maintenance procedures.
    • Previous cement plant experience in production.
    • Previous control room operating experience.
