    The Maintenance Manager has direct accountability for the Safety, financial and operational performance of the Exshaw Cement Plant Maintenance program. The Maintenance Manager plays a key role in developing and executing on all budgets, cost savings, performance plans and Key Performance Indicator (KPI’s) targets. He/she is specifically accountable to the Maintenance budget and spare Ensures safe and healthy working conditions in operations under his/her responsibility. This position revolves around all activities related to the maintenance and improvement of plant equipment in order to meet long term reliability, cost and quality goals.


    Health and Safety:

    • Demonstrates a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to safety policies in all work environment areas. Promotes a positive safety culture through leadership by example.
    • Ensures safe and healthy working conditions in sites under his/her responsibility
    • Ensure safe work practices by co-workers, employees and contractors in all areas of work, in his area of responsibility
    • Implements an effective health and safety action plan including training, communication, audits, aligned with the HSMS developed by the Country organization & the Group.
    • Report on accidents/incidents assuring follow-up as per the Exshaw procedures
    • Embraces a continuous improvement mentality for housekeeping to eliminate spillages and systemic housekeeping issues.
    • Ensure strict compliance with all health and safety rules and country regulations


    Environment, Land & Community Relations:

    • Establishes the environment as a priority. Ensures all local and provincial and federal regulations are met or exceeded by following Lafarge best practices and the conditions of site permits are strictly adhered to.
    • Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, license requirements and applicable laws; EG: stacking monitoring, opacity incident reporting, water effluent sampling, CKD  handling, and waste disposal. As well, ASTM, CSA, MQO, internal targets and limits.
    • Participate, support and respect Plant/Community initiatives. eg: Tours, Open Houses, community engagement, etc.
    • Handle complaints in a professional manner.


    Financial Management:

    • Promotes a culture of performance. Effectively develops goals and objectives to implement actions, track performance and continuously look for opportunities for improvement
    • Drives the maintenance related component of the PDP process and all maintenance pillars are involved in its development. Actively participates in setting annual Budget in line with Group objectives and country realities with a sufficient level of detail to drive execution and tracking.
    • Conducts monthly financial review and forecast with team. Communicates and builds actions accordingly.
    • The incumbent is responsible to develop necessary capital expenditures within his/her department to maintain and improve productivity.
    • Manages working capital inventory in terms of spare parts and oversees the active review and refinement of spare part management with consideration of risk of failure and availability.




    • Coordinate the preventative and proactive maintenance of all plant and infrastructure equipment.
    • Redress plant emergencies and break downs with the appropriate resources
    • Embrace RCA process and actively drive and promote it within the department and plant.
    • Works closely and collaboratively with other departments, Production, Quarry, Process, Quality, and Environment.
    • Works closely with Procurement to establish BCC sourcing, competitive TPS contracts, operational supplies and services contracts.
    • Adhere to the CIF Maintenance program, implement, maintain and improve program elements.
    • Maintain strong relationship with rCIP group.
    • Provides leadership at the daily and weekly operations meeting to identify and resolve reliability issues with plant equipment.
    • Plans maintenance activities in a way that is compatible with the overall operation of the plant. Planning is both long term (3 year performance plan and budget), or short term (monthly and weekly activities.
    • Set objectives, guidelines and priorities for the department.






    • ‘Walks the floor.’ Takes the time to be present in all locations of the operations, and to be open to all levels of the organization, to communication and concerns.
    • Participates in the building of the career and succession plan for the key positions and employees in his/her area of responsibility
    • Ensure the right persons are in the right position. Hires and dismisses staff in co-ordination with HR, as required.
    • Follows and promotes the Lafarge HR business cycle (O & HR Review, Annual performance review, Annual Objective setting, Individual Development Plans, Career, & Succession Plan.)
    • Ensures compliance with the Collective Agreement within the department. and manages all labor issues within the department in compliance with the Collective Agreement.
    • Guide and assists the departmental staff in the administration of the Collective Agreement, the handling of grievances and the application of discipline.
    • Actively promotes a diverse and inclusive workforce.
    • Develop a staffing plan for the department to ensure adequate hourly and staff personnel levels that meet the current and future needs of the department and plant.
    • Adhere to the collective agreement and HR policies on a fair and consistent basis
    • Participate as a member of the union management committee.
    • Participate in the administration and implementation of the safety program by ensuring that all of the safety programs are functioning properly.
    • Promote participation from department employees (hourly and salaried) through delegation of responsibilities, sharing of information on the plants and department’s goals and constraints and recognition of individual performance.
    • Develop procedures with suppliers to ensure equipment reliability, maximize their service, minimize the cost and minimize the plant inventory.




    • Reports actions and results for his area through a monthly activity letter and annual
    • Provide cost budgeting, cost forecasting and control of department expenditures.
    • Administers IFM and supplier contract vendors.




    • Direct Reports: (5) Electrical Coordinator, Maintenance Coordinator, Methods Engineer, Improvement Engineer, Stores Supervisor.
    • Indirect Reports: Staff (10) Hourly (30):
    • Quarry, 2 kilns, 3 raw mills, 3 finish mills


    • Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering or, in the absence of this, a Technologist diploma or trades certificate with significant experience in the industry.
    • Must be proficient in Computerized Maintenance Management skills. SAP
    • 10 years of cement manufacturing experience
    • Minimum of 5 years of management experience
    • Proven team leadership
    • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
    • Strong communication, negotiation and change management skills
    • Good knowledge of Cement production equipment and Cement industry
    • Good knowledge of working in unionized environment
    • Ability to foster and grow a strong safety culture
