    This is a one year contract role to start with every intention to convert this to full time permanent status.




    Support the Unit by providing guidance and assistance at the site level with, health and safety program implementation, execution of planned health and safety initiatives, and adherence to legislative requirements.  Work closely with site supervisors to ensure appropriate health and safety practices are in place, understood and effectively used to avoid preventable health and safety occurrences.


    • Provide on-going, in-field coaching to operations personnel to help drive adoption of safe behavior, and adherence with health and safety requirements and expectations.
    • Assist sites with the execution of health and safety improvement plan objectives; identifying improvement areas, developing and supporting execution of action plans.
    • Work directly with the unit management team, particularly site supervisors, to ensure implementation and ongoing improvement of health, safety, and loss control processes and systems within the operation.
    • Participate in the effective communication and execution of programs associated with the Health and Safety Management System.
    • Coach, guide and assist site personnel in understanding their responsibilities related to management of health, safety, and loss control issues, particularly hazard recognition and control, risk assessment, and application of the hierarchy of controls.
    • Assist in the development of safe work processes for manufacturing, maintenance and operational functions with a focus on high-risk activity.
    • Collect, analyze and distribute health and safety KPI information on a regular basis.
    • Deliver training modules and programs reflective of applicable legislative requirements and corporate safety policies, procedures and practices.
    • Assist with action tracking and follow-up for health and safety audit action plans to ensure all items have been completed effectively and on time.
    • Support site management to ensure the early and safe return to work for injured employees.

    Relationships with Other Jobs:

    • Work closely with site-level and unit-level management on implementation of Health and Safety Management System, processes and training.
    • Engaging, coaching and influencing the site and area leaders with health and safety activities and processes with an aim of 75-80% of “face time” in the field.
    • Interface with Corporate Health and Safety Department in other areas in the development of programs and systems, including:
      • Worker Compensation Program
      • Return – to – Work (Light / Modified Duty) Program
      • Occupational Medical Evaluation Program
      • Consequence Management Program


    Specific Accountabilities:

    • Ability to work flexible hours as dictated by the requirements of the position, including extra time at peak intervals
    • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage multiple activities
    • Mature attitude and ability to work effectively independent of supervision
    • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
    • Strong organizational skills, with ability to attend to detail, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
    • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with ability to relate to persons at all corporate levels, with diverse educational, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds


    • Applicable College or University education, plus formal training in specialized areas
    • 2-5 years of experience working in an operational-type role
    • 2-3 years in a Health and Safety or related role preferred
    • Timely and sound decision-making skills
